I want to do something. I just don’t know what.

I have no idea what to do

This is a really frustrating place to be.

You know you want change.

You know you want something different.

You may even know that you were built for more than the 9-5.

But when faced with the question 'What do you want to do?' your mind is completely blank.

Why does this happen?

It's not because you don't have ideas, or should give up your goals.

It's usually because you're:

  • overthinking
  • overwhelmed
  • looking for the perfect idea

Your brain shuts down instead of exploring possibilities or creating new ideas.

The problem with waiting for clarity

A lot of people wait for clarity on which direction to head, and then they will begin. However, clarity doesn't come first.

Action creates clarity.

Instead of trying to figure out the whole picture,  try asking yourself:

'What am I curious about right now?'

Not whats profitable. Not what others have suggested or expect.

Just lean into your curiosity.

Start small. REALLY SMALL.

Don't try to commit to anything big. Ignore the bigger picture or the end goal.

You just need:

  • one small step
  • one test
  • one action

Examples could be:

  • writing something
  • researching something
  • setting a timer for 15 minutes

Why this works

Once you start, your brain switches from 'I don't know what I want' to 'I know how this feels'.

And that's where decisions come from.

Final thought

You don't need to have a master plan, a set of measurable goals or have it all figured out.

You just need to start. Somewhere. Anywhere.

If you are stuck in that in lost stage, talking it through can help you see what's already there.

That's exactly what Hippo Brain is for.
